OUR TRADITIONS – CONTINENTAL CAKE
Monarch Cakes has been a Melbourne icon for over 80 years.
The shop was opened in Lygon Street, Carlton in 1931 by a Polish émigré and her family. After many years of experience baking European cakes at their cake shop in Poland, they migrated to Australia bringing with them their delightful recipes and traditional continental style of baking.
Monaco, as it was known then, established itself as the centre of 1930’s euro-café society. As many of its clientele moved towards the seaside suburb of St Kilda, so too did Monaco. In 1934 Monarch Cakes was reborn in Acland Street, St Kilda, where it has remained in the same premises now for almost 75 years. Monarch Cakes was and still is a destination for both locals and tourists. On week days, the street is bustling with international and interstate tourists mingling with locals in the pursuit of great coffee, cakes and a place to unwind while taking a break from their busy lives.
Monarch Cakes is a place where tradition is paramount. Old style ambience, relaxed and friendly service, and genuine warmth that is usually only found in a family run business. On weekends the street becomes frenetic, and the footpaths are crammed as suburban Melbourne converges on Acland Street. It is lovely to sit and watch the delighted faces of those savouring the tastes of a great coffee and delicious cake.
